New Magazine:
-Since we discovered that we cannot use SFX magazine, we will be using:
They are very Women focused, and are more for modern day, generally 'stronger' women, and we think that this will be well suited for our double page spread because of the fact that our documentary is about exploring the roles of women in comics and showing how much they have been belittled, the inequalities in subtext and so on, we we would like to empower women.

Ancillary Power point: All together now!

DRAFT 5:
-For this, I've stuck with the idea of having a woman at the center of the add. and used Zane's idea of the comics, and also added his text and text style to the add. I've also changed the colour to orange to match the logo.
-This time I've kept the woman clear, and obscured the background a little with her hair. I've kept the comicy box style for the lettering (art by Dustin Nugyen).

Mirella's Anciliary:
THIS is Mirella's first draft of the ancillary, it's the advertisement. I couldn't put it up because blogger was acting up again, sorry for the inconvenience!

-This is far too basic. The text can be better placed and it's also missing other information.

-This hasen't been properly looked at, but i believe that we should change the colour scheme to orange and white, like the logo. It would work better in terms of design.

-It was suggested that instead of having a lot of women on the page there should be only one. This looks more like a 'childerens Tv show advertisment', which i slightly agree with. It needs to be more mature.

Anciliary Work: Zane
My second draft of the ancillaries has to be flattened and added to my blog, but here is what Zane has been up to!
Third Draft (Ad):
EBI
-For this we didn't think that the graphics did a really good job portraying the documentary, it's too simple and doesn't match up with the mood of the documentary. It would be better if there was a picture of maybe a well know woman from comic books.

-However the Orange of the boxes work well because it goes with our ComicCorp. logo colours.

-This one is very creative and engaging. It's a good example of clever advertising, 'Women in Comics', a woman made of comics, hence, she's in comics. Good one Zane!

I also had the worry that because it needs to be at a distance for the womans face to be seen clearly, people wont see the detail, that the little pictures a comic covers. Also because our advertisment will be taking up the whole page of a newspaper i fear that it will be too close and people wont really get it (i realised this after seeing it in print form).

Ancillary Tasks:
-We've set to work on these over the half term.
Fist up, the newspaper Ad (by Zane)
-This was his first design, and i really liked it, it's very bold, engaging and interesting. He said he wanted the layout to look like a comic book page, which i can appreciate, my criticism for this, however, was that there was just too much going on, with irregular miss matching fonts (with slight grammar error). I found it a little hard to make out on the writing at the bottom.
-So he took that on board and came up with this, which is fantastic, simple, has got all the right info, to the point, and a great choice of graphic.
IMPROVEMENT!
-Teachers criticism for this was that the green didn't go, and the style, and add the 'comic corp.' logo and adjust it so that the white wasn't there.
-I suggested, that we could probably break convention and stylise the More4 logo to fit the style that we want, that's mostly dark colours, red/black.
Secondly! The double page spread (Me)
-This is my first design, i wanted to have a dark colour scheme (black/red mostly), i wanted it to be quite dynamic, glossy looking and quite active, also much like the pages of a comic book. There is dummy text in the text block, but for the actual final draft we will have real text to do with the documentary. I wanted it to be mostly visual, to catch the readers eye with a snappy title.
-Problems with this: The background is boring and quite blank, i couldn't decide on what images to use to fill it up and make it look fuller.
-I also don't think that the images are that interesting, they are relevant, but not as bold as i would have liked to make them.
IMPROVEMENT!
-I then came up with this. Zane suggested that we connect the Ad and the double page spread even more through imagery, so, as you may faintly see in the background, i have used the same image of the girl that he used in his Ad. It's quite subtle but effective because it's a good 'filler', you may not notice it when it's there, but like in the first draft, when it's not there, it looks a little more empty and unfinished. I also used a second picture i found myself. These enhance the edginess and dark style we have.
-I also added a subtitle for the text block and on the bottom right, more text. There are a few mistakes, but these are only first drafts which i did on paint.net (a little like photoshop, but but in a basic 'pain' style). I believe Zane did his in Illustrator. We will be doing the final draft on Indesign.

Changes-
At first we wanted a slide show with covers of comic books with women on them. But then we went with Zanes idea instead, which is the new beginning of the slide show. He put up of the clip of batgirl, anime con., the comic flip and then the interview, this worked much better visually, then me and Mirella edited it.
Our first idea for the Comic Corp ident was to have someone flipping through a comic book, reaching the logo at the end, then to cross-fade that into the actual logo, (bellow, rought visual)
-but instead we came up with the three women passing it around instead. The previous idea proved to be difficult in terms of framing and pace. This one was better because it incorporated the idea of women.

Super-Update:
Haven't updated in a while, too busy focusing on the work, but the next serise of posts will show everything that has been done so far.
Where we left off:
-Scrip problems: Too much content,
The structure of our production was too much like a miniuture documentary. We went through two structures to get to our final production.
-Music problems: Using too much copyrighted material
We were unable to use the music we wanted.
-Filming problems:
We were unable, eventually, to film at Forbidden Planet.
Solutions!
1.Me, Zane and Mirella started making our own on Garage band, then uploading it onto iTunes and editing it further on imovie.
-We picked a simple tune to put in the back ground, but we found that other members of our media class, upon watching it, found it too repetitive and annoying, so we decided to alternate between two main tunes, as well as using the 'Kryptonite' song by Three Doors Down. This worked very well, and gave variation, keeping interest.
2. There were further issues with getting permission to film at Forbidden Planet that would have taken a lot of time.
-Unable to film outside and infront of these two places, we settled on filming not only in the black drama room, but also found it suitable to film in the library. Because it would have taken a while to get permision from our local library, and also one by little venice, (which has a big manga/ comic section) we decided to film in out school library.
3. The script was changed three times, i'll be posting all three drafts later. Google documents is being a problem, and has very limited file space, however it's where we were instructed to do our blogs.
-Also, another draft of storyboards was drawn up, i'll be posting those later as well.
-We also decided to add an ident, which i will be mentioning in another past.

Late post is late:
Ok, so i haven't been able to hope onto a computer and just post this, but here is the news:
FILMING AT FORBIDDEN PLANET:
-It went ok, we filmed what i said we were going to in the last post, but we were unable to film inside, so we took some pictures that we might be able to use. (It wasn't explained to me in the e-mail from Mr Harrison that there were other issues to do with getting permission for filming there.)
TEACHERS COMMENTS:
-Problem! The opening shots of our production were good, but the sound quality was awful, so we have had to scrap the whole thing, and do it somewhere quieter, it would be great to do it outside, but both Calamity and Forbidden Planet are on main roads, and this just wont be possible.
-Solution! We will be using our schools drama room (with good lighting/acoustics) to do the presenters introduction, with comic related material displayed, this will work very well. Mirella is organising this with the drama teacher.
-Problem! We show much too much on our opening, it's supposed to be a taster, but we explain too much, and we will not be able to fit everything on the script into our extract.
-Solution! We've edited the script, cut it down, and organised it better. So the plan is, it's only one scene, the presenter talking then the voice overs coming in with relevant clips, rather than what we originally hoped (which was the presenter appearing in front of the places we were going to have on the documentary, as well as the voice overs).
(Note: We already have all our clips, so what we could do is rearrange our storyboards maybe, just to keep everything the same, but come editing i dont think there would be much point to it.)
MUSIC:
-Me and zane have been discussing it, and we have come up with come music we would like to use in our product. Here is the e-mail, with a list of music we have compiled. He wanted to find music that we relevant to the topic,

Teacher's comments+ some thoughts:
Well, miss said that what we have is good, but the order we have them in doesn't work visually,
--E.g. we have a few shots of someone drawing, so naturally it is assumed that next a person will be talking about drawing etc, but then the next few clips after that show something completely different.
My argument for this was that it would all be explained in the voice overs, but I've taken her judgment into account, so me and my group will be doing some re-organising of shots.
NOTE: Our group's idea's really do mesh well together upon viewing the clips. Zane's consumerism idea, (I'm thinking of the the shots of stalls with more masculine comics, followed right after by more feminine stalls, i like the contrast there.) and Mirella's on showing comic culture, so far it's mostly men on the comics side, and generally girls and boys one the manga side, but girls are associated with it a lot more. Unfortunately, Mohammed's is the odd one out here.

Idea (From evaluation)

- Do a random fade out during mid-sentence, while the presenter is talking: This should (hopefully) create some frustration in the audience, so they would want to know about the rest of the documentary.

Peer Evaluation:
Today's lesson was to evaluate each others work. This was a very productive lesson, the main points that were made about ours so far were:
1) Improve the script i.e explanations before the dialogue.
-To add to this i need to clarify that the extended dialogue of the presenter is going to be a VO on other clips.
2) 'Make sure that the audience know that there will be more to the documentary (5 min extract, therefor an idea of what they are going to miss out).'
-I agree, however just to point out, there will be extracts of interviews, which will be muted with the presenter's VO talking about them. This does do that, but i understand what the point being made is, it looks like a 5 minute documentary.

- I said i didn't agree so much with this one, but never the less we'll experiment with more angles.

Targets to Improve:
A list of things i think i need to improve on:
1. I need to do some deeper research: Go to the places i want to film, get some audience feed back etc.
2. Make my blog more visual and interactive: e.g. put up diagrams instead of lists.
3. Schedule my time efficiently, plan when to film, and how long it's going to take.
4. Analyse things, and extract what i want from them efficiently, e.g. research info, conventions from other documentaries i have looked at.
5. Draw a variety of angels in my storyboards, make them visually detailed and understandable.
6. Look at more documentaries, take aspects from them that i like and could possibly use, look at how they portray their desired mood e.g. from light hearted to serious simply by the change in music.
7. Get permission from 1. Forbidden planet 2. Comic and Book exchange shop in Notting hill gate 3. from the people i will be talking too. (Make permission slips)

Groups + Tasks
So, every one's presentations are done! It took a while due to us only having two lessons a week with a big class.
So firstly, my team:
Zane -His original idea was 'Media Consumption', Genders specifically, what they bought and how the media influenced them to do so.
Mirella - Her original idea was 'Skateboard Culture' as i have mentioned before.
EDIT: Mohammad- Who's presentation i also evaluated. His original idea was 'Islamaphobia'.
Task (A) Whose idea are you taking forward and why? (With WWW&EBI)
We have chosen to take my idea through 'Women and Comic Books'. We have chosen to take this idea because everyone in the group thought it was unique and interesting, something we would all find exciting to work on. It has a specific focus and i have done my best to record the process of development i went through to get it to this stage, which they took a look at. All the planning and research is done to a good standard, and thought out as best as possible. It's something that can connect with their idea's also. I believe that the documentary will be better when we take the aspect of culture from Mirella's documentary idea, and put it into mine as well, so we need to develop this and mesh it with 'Women in Comics', how they have influenced females today etc. This is a good because it will give the audience a wider view on comics so that they will hopefully have a better understanding of the issues raised. My idea doesn't really leave room for this, so it will be an improvement, however we need to identify exactly what part of the culture we want to show.
It can also go with Zane's idea, about 'Media Consumption', which will also be another improvement on my original idea. Who buys what? And why? Again, based on women, why do they buy certain things? for example, skimpy costume duplicates of women characters in comics, or other merchandise. I would also like to delve into men's views about it all, what they think about the idea that women are treated unfairly, and if it affects what comics/merchandise they buy. This will also need to be developed, which will delve deeper into my subject, incorporating the larger media aspect into it, which i didn't really explore in my research.
The problem with this might be the time issue, if we will be able to cover everything that we want to cover with culture, media consumption and Barbara Gordon. We will also definitely be filming at anime convention, So we really need to hurry up and get all our research/planning sorted out before then so we know what we will be doing, this is the tricky part. These ideas will all become clearer with future brainstorms on the idea that we will do as a group. Things need to be discussed, developed and finalised.

What i will specifically do:
I want to work with my group and lead a brainstorm to come up with exactly what we want, then i want everyone to draft a script. I want us to look at them all, and analyse them then decide on the best parts of each, then put them together to make a second collaborated draft, then produce another after we have had the teacher look at it.
Then i would like to work with with the DP/Assistant Director Zane to come up with a finished storyboard based on the script, and check this with my teacher. I would also work with Art Director/Assistant DP and make sure that i also have her opinions for improvement on the storyboard, and consult with her during filming about our equipment, listening to her about errors in our filming. This is also a sort of action plan, but i will be overseeing everything, making sure that it all goes to plan.
This is all i have so far, i'll come back and maybe add more if need be.

Zane -His original idea was 'Media Consumption', Genders specifically, what they bought and how the media influenced them to do so.
Mirella - Her original idea was 'Skateboard Culture' as i have mentioned before.

Task (A) Whose idea are you taking forward and why? (With WWW&EBI)
We have chosen to take my idea through 'Women and Comic Books'. We have chosen to take this idea because everyone in the group thought it was unique and interesting, something we would all find exciting to work on. It has a specific focus and i have done my best to record the process of development i went through to get it to this stage, which they took a look at. All the planning and research is done to a good standard, and thought out as best as possible. It's something that can connect with their idea's also. Self Assesment of Presentation:
8/9 October '09
So i did my presentation! It went quite well, now i have to explain WWW and EBI.
(H)- Women in comics
Firstly, EBI.
1.The videos on my presentation played, then just seemed to stop. I have no idea why, but i need to brush up a bit more on my power point presentations, this was a unlucky. But everyone seemed to get the general idea.
2.Which i have mentioned before, about Tokyology. I hadn't identified exactly what conventions i wanted from it, i just had a general idea. It was pleasing to watch and very active with visuals, but i didn't explain this (verbally) in my presentation, so i have done it in the last few posts before this. The general feel is what i really wanted people to understand, but this just isn't good enough, it needed to be explained in terms of conventions and sound.
3. I also need to think a little more about my ancillary tasks, (although we will be doing them later) and it's just been clarified that it's supposed to be a newspaper advertisement and a feature article, so i will have to work on the feature article bit more, i have a good idea for the ad.
4. I also want to do a little more research, my teacher didn't mention this as a 'must' because i have a focus, (Batgirl) which i will be doing a lot of research into, but it would be good.
5. Our teacher wanted us to explain three ideas. I only clearly went into two, the third idea i just touched on (comics culture) but i hope to incorporate it into my documentary anyway. However i did mention all my ideas at the beginning.
-I do believe that's the most of it, but still liable to change. (Picture above; some imagery of Oracle, showing her in distress. This doesn't actually happen in the issue, but they have chosen to show her this way. Something i found amusing- The batman symbol on the memory stick.)
Now, on to WWW.
1. I covered, i think, everything that needed to be addressed in the presentation.
2. My definition of a documentary was a good base to work on.
3. Presentation skills quite good. e.g. reading from board/speaking to audience, balance of visuals and text, relevant information, clear explanations, showing skills (links/videos/moving images etc.).
4. I had my focus, which was the main problem.
5. TA- comic fans/feminists, was a good target, because i wanted to get a larger audience. I also rated my documentary as a PG, which would also get me that larger audience.
Targets to improve:
-So yes, improve on power point presentations, to ensure that they will work.
-Analyse more and get the point. Explain/example/expand.
-Timing! I took too long, so i need to think about this, and try to do better to control the length of my presentations.
-I also need to think about my ancillary tasks more thoroughly.
There is more i think, i will need to improve on this. Now, i need to do some peer assessment of other peoples presentations. I think im going to look at who's i have the most notes on.
(M)- Islamaphobia
-I thought he had a very interesting idea, it would make a good documentary. The title explains it's self really, it's about why people look so negatively on Islam.
-He explained things thoroughly, so i understood what he wanted and how he wanted to construct it. However looking at his actual presentation skills, he wasn't really engaging. The explanations, although thorough, were a little too long, more imagery could have been used to illustrate his ideas more.
-He had a good list of conventions that i hadn't had in my presentation, so that was very interesting and informative, and gave us a good idea of how he wanted to go about things.
-He had information about how people viewed Islamic culture which was also very interesting material to use, very relevant.
-The biggest problem i found with this however was with footage. He wanted to show footage of violence based on his topic, and he wanted to go about this by showing other clips, so not actually stuff he's caught on camera himself. This i think this posed a problem, it would be difficult to find something like that himself.
-His overall plan was quiet good. He wanted to film in mosques, so he had locations, he addressed music. He talked about having rock music in his documentary as well as Islamic, the explanation to this was because it's what the soldiers in Iraq listen too when they are fighting. This was interesting but i don't think that the audience watching would have understood this. He also addressed fonts, that suited his subject.
-He didn't really have developed storyboards, so this could have been improved.

It has a big impact, showing how Islamic people are labeled in people's minds, that it might as well be written all over their faces, and it's written in newspaper cutouts, which could be saying that it's the media's fault for, promoting it, lets say. -This idea was very original.
-She addressed locations, two skater parks where she could film. She talked about TA also, and how she would attract them.
-She did research on Documentaries, and had a good enough understanding of them to base her idea around and start the planning/research process.
-She thought that showing clips of the skaters doing tricks with an accompanied voice over/music would be a good way to fill the time, and i also though this, it would have been interesting. She showed us some clips of what kind of things she would film skaters doing, which looked very impressive, she got her idea from some other documentaries she looked at, so she had identified conventions. She had a good balance of imagery and text, and her powerpoint was interesting to view.
-She could have explained things a little more clearly but we got the idea about what she wanted.
-The music she was talking about using really seemed to fit with her subject, as a part of skateboarding culture.
-She was missing a storyboard however, which was the main down side.
-EBI she had a clear idea of what she wanted to talk about specifically in her 5 minutes. She did cover all three ideas, but she didn't mention whether she wanted to either (a) follow a skateboarder and base the documentary on them, or (b) talk about their culture in general. She did eventually pick (a), which we as a class agreed was a much better idea. But she would need to be careful, and consider the reliability of the person in question.

(R)- Street art
-Again, she talked about her ideas, they were 'Street art' and a band called 'Watershed'. It was mostly focused on 'Watershed' but with a short class review she decided it was better to go with street art. This subject is also quite unique and interesting.
-The most impressive thing here was the tech that she used to do her presentation, which ran on Flash (I'll get the exact name from her). It had great transition effects, zooming into a corner of the screen where we could see the details of what was actually there. The motion was very fluid and visually pleasing to watch.
-She had a storyboard that illustrated what she wanted to show, although it wasn't too developed, there could have been a bigger rang of angles, which would have been better. She talked about locations, for example, filming at a live gig.
-She talked about music, what fitted her genre. She talked about Loius Theroux, which i myself will also be looking into later.
-She went into good detail about her ancillary tasks, her idea's were very creative and interesting.
-However i think she could have had a little more research in her presentation, i felt that it was lacking just a little in this.

A New Year: A2
Hi,
This blog will be from here on a record of my 2009 A2 media course. I will be constantly updating it every time I do something new. I don't think that there is more to be said. Before, i used scrap books, but now it's necessary to use something more up-to-date. This new year comes with new challenges and we all have to work harder, but first:
1. What did I learn last year?
Well, I pretty much learnt how to use the camera's the school gave us, and the tripods and mac computers. Specifically on the mac's, I had to learn how to use imovie and Garage Band, as well as learning how to upload our filming onto the computers. I learnt how to cut, add transitions, add effects, add sound, split clips, overlay sounds, add text/credits, upload sounds from Garage Band and make my own music on Garage Band. Editing, as I learned, takes.a.long.time.
I also learned camera angles, and their purpose, how to use them effectively. I also learned how to write a real script, that was what I really wanted to learn, and I wrote my own. The most important thing that I learnt was continuity, the audience has to understand what is going on in front of them at the drop of a hat (more or less), that and the way a scenario is constructed, because what is happening must be apparent to the viewer. This also includes match on action, things need to be fluid.
There are also story boards, they need to portray angles accurately, so it pays to be able to draw well. They are important because they tell you what you have to do, what you have to film, so your prepared for filming, and get it done quickly. Time is always short. And lastly, actors... it's always good to have understudies if your using actors, nobody is 100% reliable, and other things are bound to go wrong if your not 100% confident in your planning. I've learnt this from my preliminary, there were a few things that were last minute, and it was very stressful. We didn't have a proper allocated time for filming. Research is important, you have to get things right, or then you'd be lying or targeting the wrong audience or falsely portraying what/whoever is in your media product.
3.What do you want to learn this year?
I would like to improve my ability to use the equipment/software, and generally get better at planning/research. I would like to learn how to use photo shop effectively, and indesign to make effective posters and improve on what I have already learnt.
2.'What went well' and 'Even Better If':
Well, I got a pretty good grade, and my group had great dynamics, we got along and listened to each other and worked hard towards our grades. Our production ended up looking brilliant, we managed to get the planning done thoroughly. I went through my evaluation improving a it a little bit here and there until it was satisfactory. It would have been 'even better if' we had been more confident to film, we were not to sure about our ability to do so, and due to our actress becoming ill, (she's better now I'm glad to say) we had to do some major changes in our planning, there was no contingency plan in case there was something was wrong with the actors, and we had to scramble to finish our main product. We did our planning but our organisation was lacking, if we had been more organised then there wouldn't have been a scramble. So, confidence, contingency and organisation could have been better.
3. 3 targets to improve.
N.o 1. Be ready to go out and film, do what you have to do to motivate your group.
N.o 2. Make sure that you know when, where, how and exactly what your going to do, and make sure everybody in the group knows it. Work on a schedule, plan your time efficiently.
N.o 3. Get better at using the equipment.
So that's the re-cap, i might come back and improve on it, but that's it for now.
