Information update

25 sept, 1/2 October '09 work

Haven't really been able to get to post lately, so here is everything so far, this is mostly all the extra research i put onto my presentation, which is now over and done with :)

Documentaries:

‘…a record of the human experience and the natural world, and an instrument of artistic and social expression.’

^ This is something that really grabbed at my attention, and it really explained my idea well i think. I have looked at documentaries, but i wanted to do a little more.

'Part of the fascination with documentaries lies in their unique blend of writing, visual images, sound tracks, and the individual styles of their producers.'

This is the source: http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/D/htmlD/documentary/documentary.htm

Some conventions i have seen and want to use, i may ad to these.

  • Interviews (planned, at least 1 at most 3, depending on time)
  • Asking people questions on the street.
e.g. Show them a comic book then ask their opinion of it.
  • Handy-cam to give a sense of realism.
  • Voice overs e.g. on clips of anime con. explaining what the viewers are seeing, to make things more interesting.
  • Showing clips. (e.g. trailers, old TV shows)
  • I also thought that my documentary could start off as if it were coming back from an advert break.
  • The convention in most documentaries are that they are quite heavy, showing a harsh truth, with a serious attitude. I want to maintain this attitude but without making it so harsh, more lighthearted because it's about a subject i love and i want it to be enjoyable.

Going back to Tokyology, after my presentation i needed to identify what exactly i liked from it, so here i have identified some aspects of it that i like and want to use.

  • It shows clips, then zooms into them, and i find this very engaging and exciting. I would like to use this.
  • There is also an active presenter, like in most documentaries, going around talking to people casually asking questions etc, so i would like to do this with either myself or someone else from my group.
  • Showing previews of what is going to be seen/talked about in the documentary. So this has inspired me to make the extract for my documentary from the beginning, which i think would be quite good, but I'm not too sure.
On another note, i also looked at the site for Comics Britannia, but it was mainly about comics in the UK, i will mostly be talking about comics in context of today, and how women are portrayed, but i might dip into a bit of history, i will see to all the specific details come writing the script.

COMICS BRITANNIA

'Love is in the air

By the late 1950s, teenage girls - growing up faster than boys - found their fantasies answered in a rush of romance comics, such as Mirabelle, Romeo, Cherie, Valentine and Roxy. Several featured comics based on hit records, some involving the pop stars themselves. All the heartache and tears would usually be resolved by true love and a final tender clinch with Mr Right. In 1964, the thoroughly modern Jackie, named after author Jacqueline Wilson, a Thomson's newspaper reporter at the time, brought a taste of the Swinging Sixties and women's magazines into weekly comics for younger girls. Jackie was more than a comic or magazine; it became the readers' friend, confidante and surrogate parent, from whom they could seek advice on how far to go with boyfriends and other adolescent anxieties.'

NONE of the above comics (bar Jackie) have much on them on the Internet, which is unfortunate, but Jackie, interestingly enough went out of publication because it wasn't following the trend that was a sort of 'sexually and high-fashion orientation' so says wikipedia (hmm). It had models such as Fiona Bruce, the journalist, and was named after Jacqueline Wilson, children's writer.

Text:

Now this was hard, because i wanted to find a font that was comic like, so that the audience would get the idea what it would be about, but also to be taken seriously because it is a documentary. Some fonts;

I liked these ones i found on the net, specifically the last one in the first row, and the third one down from the middle row. They are fun and creative, but not too crazy.

I also like this one across, it's bold with a
neutral colour. I got this from here;

LETTERING

However i thought that this one was what i really wanted. Serious, but also a comic font.
(The bit in green 'Font Sale!')

TA:

Just to say this quickly, it is quite obvious -Comic fans- but on account of the fact that it's about women in comics, i want to try to appeal to feminists also.

That's it on my general research into construction. I had to change a few things and make improvements, i realised i was missing a few things that i hadn't addressed, so this is to fill those in. I think that's it, i might come back a make a few changes.
